Actually, that’s not entirely true. Miles totally reviewed the X-Men, and then I tried to download the files over the crap hotel WiFi so I could edit them, and, yeah, that is definitely not happening.
(Incidentally: This is Rachel, reporting live-ish from Norwescon! I was on five panels today, including a last-minute pinch hit on the Queer Comics panel, and I am a little con-giddy, so.)
ANYWAY, here are some brief thoughts to fill the gaping void the video reviews would otherwise occupy:
Cyclops #12: I am kind of bummed that Black Vortex Cyclops isn’t just Space Pirate Cyclops from Mutant X. I mean, it wouldn’t make sense, but it would be awesome.
Wolverines #19: Can Fantomelle and X-23 run away and be benevolent teen supercriminals together? I would read that book.
Uncanny Avengers #3: I’m still completely indifferent to this arc, but it’s worth it for the Waiting for the Trade strips it has inspired.
PICK OF THE WEEK: Namor’s abs, wherever they may appear.
PANEL OF THE WEEK: I had a really good time on Nuts & Bolts of Comics Writing with G. Willow Wilson today! (Norwescon just recently began introducing comics programming–it’s mostly an old-school SFF con–so today’s comics track ended up being like 90% the Rachel and Willow Show. Also, I just realized that all but one of the comics panels I was on today were all women, and none of them were women-in-comics panels, and that is so cool.)
IN OTHER NEWS: I am really excited about Siege. Kieron Gillen writing Abigail Brand a bunch of Sinister-created Summers clones doing a desperate Westeros Night’s Watch-inflected story? Yes, please.
COMING UP SUNDAY IN THE PODCAST: Our ECCC roundtable with Kieron Gillen, Marguerite Bennet, Kris Anka, Peter Nguyen. Namor’s abs.
I am right there with you, Rachel, on bring bummed that Cyclops’ Black Vortex self isn’t his Mutant X Space Pirate incarnation. I mean, sure, it brings out “true potential” or something along those lines…
…but I’d like to think the Black Vortex brings out the ultimate potential of a being. Hence the “super-genius Beast” and “Heavenly Young Angel” thing we have going. Considering how much of a healthier relationship Young Scott (Best Scott?) has with his dad, and how he idolizes the guy, you’d think being a Space Pirate with Laser Eyes would be his Black Vortex form.
I’d also forgive if they went “Space Pirate Scott with red eyes that shoot lasers” as well.
As well. Guess it’s something for the What-If bin.
…well, crap. I meant to write “or their best self” after “ultimate potential” there. Oi.
Space Pirate Cyclops is–AFAIK–the only reasonably happy and well-adjusted Cyclops in the multiverse!
I like to think since we’ve seen that things that happen to Young Cyclops affect Present Cyclops (Battle of the Atom opened with PC fading away after YC “died”), that somewhere on Earth PC just randomly changed his appearance to the BV form while he’s doing something, looks in a mirror and shrugs, and goes back to what he’s doing.
“…meh, still better than one of my brother’s hats.”
And then he goes back to planning the Summers Brothers Pizza Joint with Alex.
“At least it’s not Erik the Red?”
WAIT OH MY GOD HOW GREAT WOULD IT HAVE BEEN IF HE’D COME OUT OF THE VORTEX AS ERIK THE RED?!
…Marvel had better put out a What If where this happens.
I don’t watch the reviews as religiously as I listen to the podcast, but I look forward to seeing it eventually. However, I just wanted to say I don’t know who I’m more excited about in that tease for the roundtable: Kid Loki scribe Keiron Gillen or Namor’s abs?
They are roughly equally delightful!
Did anyone else get an ‘Infinity Man’ vibe from Scott’s BV form, or is it just me?
