  1. Congratulations on making it to 500 episodes! I’m excited for you to get to the Morrison issues and also to hear your thoughts on the… not so beloved runs that are coming up.

  2. From the title I got terrified this was your last one! Congratulations! Here’s to the next 500!

    Also: yay, David Wynne!

  3. Congratulations on getting to 500. I’m massively behind, as I’m only able to listen every once in a while, but never think this isn’t a beloved series!

  4. Congrats on 500! I don’t comment a lot, but I really appreciate the work that goes into this podcast, both in terms of comics research and the show notes/companion and the analysis itself.

I started listening with episode 1 around the time X-Men ’97 came out, and it was really nice having this concurrent with my reading (until I overtook it :P), and filling in the blanks for the issues I didn’t read. It’s also really nice seeing appreciation for the overlooked gems of the ’90s that one can’t always find much discussion on online.

Looking forward to the Morrison era, and thank you for introducing me to borzoi.

  5. I want to note that shutting down the Earth’s magnetic field would indeed allow the solar wind to start stripping the atmosphere away, but it wouldn’t kill Magneto or anyone else. They would all be long dead by the time it became dangerous to human life. Atmospheric escape takes place on geological timescales, so it would only be a problem for their distant descendants (and, I suppose, for folks like Apocalypse, Mister Sinister, and the Living Monolith.)

    1. It’s a fair point! There were a few other side effects I could have gotten into (migration patterns, northern lights) as well, but didn’t remember them in the moment. Still a good note!

  6. If any of the silver age characters we’re going to turn out to be gay, based on the Silver age comics, I would have thought it would have been Hank

  7. A very happy semi-millenium (semillenium? Wording is fun!) to all involved in the making of the podcast

The Magneto investigation was fascinating (And hilarious), though I will mention that the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition tried to cover more bases (or Siver Age writers backsides) back in the 80’s when they wrote:

Although Magneto’s primary power is magnetism, he seems to have some ability to project or manipulate any form of energy that is related to magnetism. In the past he has fired a bolt of electricity, he has also created enough intense heat to destroy a metal door.

Heat, or infrared radiation, is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which also includes visible light, radio waves, ultraviolet light, gamma-rays, and x-rays. Magneto may be able to project any of these. He has also been shown creating an anti-gravity field, and presumably does so whenever he levitates a non-magnetic object. Hence, Magneto may be living proof of the long-sought Unified Field Theory that all forms of energy are related. However, Magneto almost always uses only magnetism, so perhaps it is more difficult for him to manipulate other forms of energy.

So Magneto might actually be hiding his true light under an electromagnetic bushel!

Loved the interview segment, and seeing how far you guys have come in that time.

It’s been quite a ride, and I look forward to… well, I’m not sure I’d wish creating ANOTHER 500 episodes of any podcast on the creators because dear god!! But if you’re still around then (And I am too) I hope to still be following you.
