Man, I got verklempt at the end. I will admit, Here Comes Tomorrow was never my favorite story (and often what I’d say with an apology as I recommended the Morrison run). However, it’s grown on me as it had to hold less the weight of “the last X-Men story of the last run I care about” (was never an Astonishing fan) and became simply a coda to the run. Still not my favorite part of Morrison, but it was a PERFECT way to end the podcast. I know I’m losing my comfort show – and probably a lot of folks are – and there is a sense of “this could’ve gone on forever”…so it’s good to be reminded over this hour that change is inevitable and it is good, even if we may not initially like it.
That being said, there is a weirdly cyclical nature to the “last X-story” I read (okay, I read 3 issues of Astonishing, but REALLY was not a fan) for over a decade (so essentially my peace out of x-men until like 2015 or so…) now being the end of the X-Men thing I most consistently followed.
A few stray thoughts:
How you describe the BAMFs is very similar, IMO, to how Spielberg makes the Jets’ snaps work in the 2021 West Side Story. Could be ridiculous, but now legit threatening….
Rover raising Skylark and loving him and getting jealous honestly has me thinking of Rover as a stereotypical Italian-American mother: No woman is good enough for my boy!
Good to know Fantomex isn’t necessarily canonically Apollyon. Battle of the Atom mentioned that as a “matter of fact” part of the text in their coverage and I legit started thinking I was oblivious…
Well I thought I’d be able to catch up before the end… I got stalled on the Mutant X trilogy of episodes because of my insistence on reading everything before listening to the podcast. Too much reading and too much life stuff. I’m up to Murder at the Mansion but I didn’t want to let another week slip by without thanking you for everything. I never read most of what came between Claremont and Morrison, so you’ve been very helpful in filling that gap (and very entertaining in the process). Best wishes in future endeavors! Karl
Kick is Sublime? What does that do in retrospect to the last story? Did Magneto become Xorn in a genuine attempt to begin again, only to be hijacked by the secret god of narrative repetition? Or that same god hijacked an actual Xorn to impersonate Magneto for the same purpose? In any case, it does seem to solve the worst problem of the previous storyline: why is Magneto acting in this way? It is because he is being impelled by a sentient bacteria whose tools are feeding his worst impulses and suppressing the better angels of his nature.
It makes a lot less sense if Xorn is actually Xorn and not Magneto, because why is this consistent with Xorn as an independent character, even his worst attributes? As irritating as this version of Magneto is, it seems what it cried out for was not retcon(tinuity) but retcon(text).
Tom Skylark seems like a reference to Tom Swift, a genius, teen inventor who appeared in a 100-odd books from 1910 onwards. I read a few as a pre-teen, but stopped after finding Moorcock, Norton, Asimov et al. Never revisited, so can’t comment on quality, but suspect the never revisiting is a comment in itself.
