  1. I enjoyed your coverage of Mutant X this month! When you talked about the series often being on the verge of cancellation, I was reminded of “Parks and Recreation,” which also often ended a season not knowing if it would be picked up for another. If you had to write a story about Pawnee X set in Earth 1298, who would be the 616 Alex Summers character who crosses over? What changes would you make to the other characters on the show? Would Jerry Gergich be the one to destroy the moon?

  2. You know, you guys disappointed me here.

There I was expecting a discussion about Mutant X, and across three entire episodes, all you do is talk about a comic without a single mention of Jesse, Brennan, Shalimar, Emma, Lexa or even Adam (the un-X-treme)!

(Okay, it’s not a great TV series, it’s barely a GOOD TV series, but it has a lot of very pretty young things running around in painfully stylish clothing, John Shea being an interesting cross of concerned altruist and self-hating scientist, and Tom McManus as an evil Andy Warhol lookalike)

Ahem, in truth I commend you for your… I want to say “diligent dedication”, but “obsessive nature” seems a touch more likely, though I’m hardly in a position to judge.

I paid no attention to this series when it came out, I was pretty much over the X-verse at this time, and this seemed even more outré than most. Which seems to have been a feature, not a bug, so that’s on me.

Though I’m not sure I’d have had the patience for this sort of endless weirdness in a real time, waiting a month for each new chunk of “Hunh?”

I salute your efforts and wish you well in your recovery.

    1. You know, as we were writing each of these episodes, I thought to myself “we should at least mention the TV show”! And the I promptly forgot to actually add that to any of the outlines, and we were too busy with the sheer mass of content to remember to bring it up on our own. Alas!

Although that said, I haven’t actually seen the show… but your description does make it sound pretty fun, at least!

  3. Currently listening to this episode while wearing a Cure shirt from Hot Topic, so thank you so much for that reference. Hahahaha

  4. This was absolutely fascinating for me. I read the first few issues of Mutant X, and enjoyed them, but even though I’m always a sucker for alternate versions of characters, it didn’t grab me enough to be one of the books I actively sought out once sourcing comics became more difficult. Therefore, until now, most of what I know about it I picked up from Paul O’Brien’s X-Axis Reviews.

Paul … was not a fan. In fact, ISTR he went through a period of not reviewing it at all because he didn’t feel he had anything interesting to say about *why* he wasn’t following it. Followed by a period where he approached each issue with the same level of vitriolic sarcasm he’d later reserve for the Chuck Austen run and the slightest mention of Romulus. I remember them being very funny, but perhaps overstating his case.

The dichotomy, I think, is that Paul was much less willing to run with the insanity, and therefore less inclined to give Mackie the benefit of the doubt. (I suspect his answer to the question “Do Vulcan and Adam-X the X-Treme exist on Earth-1298?” would be “Sure, why not? If you follow the premise logically, they shouldn’t, but that’s not how Earth-1298 works. Did we ever learn how they had a Nate Grey?”) And this means even the emotional beats don’t land for him because he’s like “I’m sure this would be very moving if I actually believed in this world or anyone who lives in it.”

Anyway, I’m now interested in seeking this out and seeing what side of the fence I fall on.
