Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men

517 – Sliding Scale Ransom

In which we totally forgot to record a cold open (sorry); a lot of characters die (but not in Earth-616); Vampires may already be in command of America’s atomic arsenal; and we revisit a favorite.

  1. I am so amused that the previous Lord of the Vampires before Dracula was “Varnae.” I’m always happy to see someone remember Varney the Vampire, one of the main literary predecessors to Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

  2. Jay’s mention of “the inexorable passage of time,” as well as detailing how many years it’s been since you last mentioned or covered some of these stories, really brought home how long you two have been at this. I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for producing such an amazing podcast for 500+ episodes. You two totally deserve to go out on your own terms.

  3. Wolverine claimed a wall using his claws with his hands sideways in Marvel Comics Presents #86, during the story that introduced Cyber!

  4. Why do you keep saying “vampires are in command of America’s atomic arsenal” like it’s new information? It’s been like that for most of my life.

Okay, they’re more “ghouls” than “vampires” but the difference is largely academic.

  5. Huh, I wonder if Simon Kinberg was using this first story as reference when he wrote the DOFP movie; depressed Xavier being attended to by Hank McCoy passing himself off as human definitely sounds familiar.

  6. As, for the longest time, we had no idea the claws were supposed to be covering something underneath, I think I aways sort of assumed the claws weren’t coated in adamantium so much as removed and replaced by adamantium, so they could be whatever shape they were cast in, they just used the claw ejection system in his forearms to pop out.

Though yes, the switch between round claws and flat blades seems a bit arbitrary.

And oh god yes, “Tarot: The Witch of the Black Rose” the sort of book you hear about to the point where you think that “Well, how bad CAN it really be?” and then you read it and sudddenly you feel like the audience at the first night of “Springtime for Hitler”‘s opening number.
